Mariah with family and friends in front of her mud and cow dung home. She is holding one of the infant twin daughters of her sister (who is in the back row, 3rd from the left). An older brother with his wife, Doris lives in the house next door. Mariah's African mother, Winnie, is the woman to the far right. She spoke little English but was a wonderful cook. Meals were cooked in an outside room over a fire. Though Mariah ate indoors with her father and 15 year old sister, Esther, her mother and the younger children ate in a back room.
